Jordan Cousins hopes Charlton can build on last week’s thrashing at Rotherham when they host Bristol City at the Valley on Saturday.

The 4-1 win at the New York Stadium – inspired by a Simon Makienok brace and strikes from Igor Vetokele and Ademola Lookman – ended a run of 11 matches without a league victory.

The vital win took Charlton to within one point of Saturday’s opposition, Bristol City.

Cousins, 21, acknowledges that the fixture is a relegation six-pointer but has urged his teammates not to be affected by the importance of the match.

He told News Shopper: “Everyone knows it’s a big game but you can’t get caught up in the pressure.

“As a team we know we’ve got quality and if all eleven players go out there with the right mind-set and give it our all we are confident we can get the three points.

“Hopefully now we’ve started to turn things around and can continue that on Saturday.”

Cousins, who made his first-team debut in 2013 and has since played over 100 games for Charlton, believed the Rotherham win was coming after sealing a point at home to Blackburn.

He said: “We all felt that it was coming, I think we performed well against Blackburn and it was good to build on that with a win at Rotherham.

“As a team we all pulled together, in the changing room we said this was a huge game, everyone was up for it and fighting for each other.

“In those kind of games the first thing you need to do is be up with the tempo.

“After that you can get the ball down and play – we knew we were a better passing team than Rotherham and in the end showed our quality.”

Bristol City secured a point last time out against Birmingham but remain in the relegation zone on goal difference.

Caretaker manager John Pemberton has confirmed that Joe Bryan will return to the first-team squad after a knee injury, while Lee Tomlin has recovered from a knock.

Meanwhile, Charlton’s deadline day signings Yaya Sanogo and Rod Fanni are not expected to start for the hosts, although the Arsenal loanee could feature on the bench.
