Charlton caretaker boss Karel Fraeye has spoken about the "easy" decision to send Tony Watt on loan to Cardiff.

The Scot, who scored three goals in the Addicks’ first three matches this season, joined Cardiff City in a loan deal which will keep him in Wales until mid-January.

Charlton say the switch will allow the 21-year-old to rediscover his early-season form, but reports suggest the loan could be extended to a permanent move.

When asked why the club agreed to allow the former Celtic star to join the Bluebirds, Fraeye said: “It’s very easy.

“When I came in Tony played, he then picked up an injury and since then we won two games in a row.

“It’s clear than Tony needs games and needs to play. Cardiff came in and we allowed him to get his games there.”

After his early burst Watt has failed to score a goal for the Addicks and Fraeye refused to categorically confirm that the forward still has a future at the Valley.

When asked whether Watt has a future in south-east London, the Belgian interim manager said: “Probably. I don’t know at this moment, he’s on loan until January and then the club will take another decision.

“We get good contact and we’re still in contact with Tony, so the club will see what the future brings.

“I don’t want to talk too much about the situation but it’s clear that he wants to play and needs to play. When Cardiff came in the decision was taken that he could go there on loan.

“Tony has got all the skills to be a very good striker in the Championship.

“He hasn’t been fit and that’s the only reason he wasn’t playing.”

Watt’s departure appears to leave Charlton short of firepower up top, but Fraeye dismissed this claim and said that Ricardo Vaz Te and youngster Ademola Lookman will step up.

“Ricardo is an important player and don’t forget we’ve got a young talent who stepped up recently [Lookman],” the 38-year-old added.

“We have to work with him and work on the long-term but he showed in Birmingham that we can use this player so he’s an extra player in the offensive part."

Fraeye also stated that he was not disappointed that the club failed to substantially bolster his squad during the emergency loan period.

He said: “No, I’m happy. I think the squad is good enough and we have enough cover for every position. I don’t know why we would need anyone else.”
