Notts County’s five-year stay in League One ended in May and, despite a change of direction, the Magpies have struggled to adapt to life in the basement division and find themselves just a place and a point above Barnet.

Dutchman Ricardo Moniz, 51, succeeded Shaun Derry at Meadow Lane at the beginning of April but the former defender, who clocked up nearly 300 appearances in Holland during his playing career, was unable to stop the rot and County were relegated after winning just one of his first six games in charge.

It was all change during the summer as Moniz, who lists Tottenham Hotspur and Hamburg among his former employers in a variety of coaching roles, cleared the decks following relegation by allowing 14 players to leave the club.

Nineteen players subsequently joined County on a permanent basis with a further two – Leicester City’s Jack Barmby and Bradford City’s Alan Sheehan (see below) – were snapped up on loan in September.

The Magpies boast the seventh-best home record in League Two with 16 of their 22 points won in front of their own fans.

Here we profile three players who could make the difference against the Bees on Tuesday.

Times Series:

Roy Carroll: The veteran goalkeeper, 38, is rapidly approaching his 400th career league start and has only made more league starts in his career for Wigan Athletic than with the Magpies.

The Northern Ireland international kept goal for his country in a 1-0 win over Latvia earlier this month and will almost certainly be part of Michael O’Neill’s 23-man squad for next summer’s European Championships in France.

Having started out at Hull City, Carroll joined Wigan for £350,000 in 1997 and made 190 appearances in all competitions before earning a £2,5 million move to Manchester United.

Scarcely number one at United, Carroll's Old Trafford career will be best remembered for spilling Pedro Mendes’ half-way line effort into his own net against Tottenham Hotspur, only to see his blushes spared by the officials’ failure to award the goal.

Spells at West Ham United and Derby County preceded a European adventure which began with Danish side OB Odense and also took in stops at OFI Crete and Olympiakos before returning to these shores in August of last year.

Times Series: Alan Sheehan - AI

Alan Sheehan: The 29-year-old Irish defender is in his second spell at Meadow Lane after turning out for the Magpies between 2011 and 2015, earning a switch to current club Bradford City.

However, the left-back-cum-left-midfielder is currently out of favour at Valley Parade and ended last season on loan at Peterborough United before being packed off on loan after just two league appearances this season.

A dangerous set piece taker, the Galway-born defender began his career with Belvedere before making his Football League breakthroough at Leicester City. Loaned to Leeds United in 2008, the move became permanent after impressing at Elland Road.

However, Sheehan was never a regular as the Whites stuttered in League One and loan moves to Crewe Alexandra, Oldham Athletic and Swindon Town followed before a brief permanent stay with the Robins.

Snapped up by County in June 2011, he would make 127 appearances in all competitions for the club – by far the most for any of the ten teams he has represented – before switching to Bradford.

Times Series:

Izale McLeod: The Magpies’ joint-top scorer with four League Two goals to his name will need no introduction to Barnet fans after hitting 32 goals in 68 league starts for the Bees between 2010 and 2012.

Now 31, the former MK Dons, Portsmouth and Crawley Town poacher resurrected his career at Underhill before joining Pompey in the summer of 2012 after turning down a contract offer which would have made him the best paid player in the club's history.

The Birmingham-born forward netted ten times in 23 league starts in his four-month stay at Fratton Park before being allowed to join League One rivals MK Dons for a second stint.

McLeod had made his name with the Dons between 2004 and 2007, becoming one of the Football League’s hottest properties thanks to a return of 54 league goals in just 105 starts, earning a £1.1 million move to Charlton Athletic.

He was restricted to just seven league starts in three years at The Valley – scoring three goals – and was loaned out to Colchester United, Millwall and Peterborough United prior to joining Barnet on a free transfer.

In the summer he was freed by fellow relegated side Crawley and joined County.
