Orient legend Peter Kitchen says he has wonderful memories of his time at the club and is grateful to have played his part in their history.

The striker enjoyed two spells with the O’s and scored in every round as he helped them reach the FA Cup semi-finals in 1978.

The Goal Gourmet, the Peter Kitchen story, which was originally written by club historian Neil Kaufman, is being re-released with a new section next week.

The new section focuses on Kitchen’s involvement with the club, and also Orient’s role in the the First World War after becoming the first English club to enlist. In total 41 players and staff enrolled for the army with three losing their lives.

Kitchen said: “It’s a wonderfully poignant story that they led the way in enlisting. I think it’s vitally important that you keep letting the next generation of fans know about this story.

“Orient epitomises a lot of the good things in football with a great community scheme and being such a multicultural club. It’s great that people are hearing about the club’s story.”

Kitchen is held in great esteem by Orient fans and his time with the O’s is one he will always cherish.

The forward, who scored 63 goals in 127 games for the O’s, said: “I love the club and have a real affinity with the supporters.

“When you are a goalscorer you tend to grab all the headlines. I have a real affinity with the club and the supporters have always held me in very high esteem.

“It’s great to be a part of Orient’s history. It’s wonderful to have played a part and influenced the club’s history.”

Despite living in Kent, Kitchen tries to see the O’s play at least three to four times each season. He will be back for a book signing at the Oxford United game on Saturday, October 17 and recently attended the Bristol Rovers win.

Kitchen said: “I think they’ve got the nucleus of a good side. In this division if you are a well organised team and have one or two match winners like Jay Simpson and Dean Cox then you have always got a chance. It’s nice to see them doing well.”

The cult hero will be back on Monday night at the supporters’ club for An Evening with Peter Kitchen. It will be a fundraising event for the O’s Somme memorial fund and admission will cost £5 with the evening getting underway at 7.45pm.
