Bakary Sako made it two goals in two Premier League games for Crystal Palace as the Eagles recorded a historic first league win at Stamford Bridge since 1982.

Sako also played a role in Joel Ward’s winner in the 2-1 triumph which lifted the Eagles to second in the table.

Palace now have a break from league action because of the international break, however, their mettle will be severely tested on the resumption with the visit of league leaders Manchester City on September 12.

Sako said: “The atmosphere in the dressing room is one of satisfaction.

“It’s been a fantastic day. It’s not easy to come and win at Stamford Bridge, but we had that feeling that we could do it, we have a really good squad who are playing well and are confident.”

The 27-year-old added: “I can’t say we were much better than Chelsea but on the turnovers and everything we kept the ball well and when they scored we didn’t think about it – we got the second goal quickly.

“We were pretty confident and along with not losing the ball too quickly when we won it back these were the keys today to winning the game.”

For the second week running the Malian international scored to help his side to three league points after excellent build up play involving the French-speaking contingent at the club.

First, Yohann Cabaye’s vision played Pape Souare into space, who then slotted it into the path of Yannick Bolasie who centred it to Sako, and despite Cesar Azpilicueta blocking the initial shot, Sako controlled with his right and slotted home with his left to make it 1-0.

“I knew Yala was going to cross it so I tried to get across but the defender blocked the first shot,” said Sako.

“Usually when it is blocked the ball goes back to the goalkeeper, but I’ve seen the ball on my foot the second time and I said ‘yeah, this is my chance to put it in’.

“I know I will always have a couple of chances when Yannick has the ball on his left foot in that position.

“I’m very proud to score, because it is not easy to score at Stamford Bridge, I’m delighted with the goal."

But more was to come for Sako as he cut the ball back from yet another Bolasie cross for defender Joel Ward to head home his second goal of the season.

“First of all I wanted to shoot it but I was too tough an angle,” explained the former Wolves player.

“I’ve seen Wardy in the box, so I said ‘yeah I have to pull it back’ and I’m very happy that he put in the net.

“I have exactly the same feeling when I score or assist because I’m here to score goals and I’m here to deliver passes so either way I’m very happy.”

Unfortunately for Palace, who sat in second in the league after the win, there is an international break which will temporarily stop their forward momentum ahead of their next Premier League game against league leaders Manchester City in two weeks.

“I wanted to stay a little bit more [with Palace] because we were on a good run but international duty called,” said Sako who now joins up with Mali ahead of their African Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin in Cotonou next Saturday.

“I am settled here and we have a very strong squad; we have very good quality in this team and we showed it today.

“To have this debut with scoring two in two is like a dream for me and I’m very happy, I’m delighted.

“This is my first season in this league and I just want to enjoy it, score and get some assists and play as many games as possible, but, as attackers, we want to help our defence from the attack and to help them keep a clean sheet and our goal safe.

“A good season will be for us to do better than last season.”
