Charlton manager Guy Luzon was full of praise for his side’s performance after tonight’s 4-1 win at Peterborough set up a third round south-east London Capital One Cup derby clash at Crystal Palace.

Mikhail Kennedy, Karlan Ahearne-Grant, Ahmed Kashi and Igor Vetokele were all on target in what was a comfortable success which now sets up an intriguing tie with former manager Alan Pardew and his Palace side.

The game will be played at Selhurst Park on the week commencing September 21.

Ironically that was the date three decades ago in 1985 Charlton played their final game at The Valley against Stoke City before beginning a controversial six-year exile at Palace’s ground, an anniversary Addicks fans will not be too keen to remember.

The Posh result means the Addicks are now unbeaten in all competitions from the first six matches.

And Luzon insisted his men will continue in the same vain during the campaign.

He said: “We dominated, scored four goals and could have scored more as well.

“In the cup there can be surprise results, but we showed a lot of character and quality and that’s the way to be successful.

“I’m very pleased because we had youngsters from the academy making their debuts today and we played very well.”

Kennedy was making his senior debut for the Addicks and opened his and Charlton’s account for the evening in the third minute.

The SE7 head coach was full of praise for the way the young forward handled himself at the Abax Stadium.

Luzon said: “Mikhail was great, his debut was brilliant.

“He’s talented and has a lot of quality.

“I saw that in training and I gave him the chance today.”

The boss added: “I was confident and I’m delighted he proved he deserved to be there.

“I’ve always had the belief in young players, the ages don’t bother me.

“If they show me that they have the quality, he will play for my side. The age isn’t important.”

The Addicks’ third goal of the evening came from a spectacular long range strike from Kashi, a 45-yard stunner Luzon insisted came as no surprise given the player’s ability.

“Ahmed is a special player with great ability and personality,” the manager explained.

“He is one of our key players this year.

“I’m happy with how he’s adapted to the league and the team and hope he’ll continue to do well this season.”

This weekend Charlton now travel to Molineux to face Wolverhampton Wanderers, where they’ll be looking to continue their fine start to the season.

Luzon added: “We must continue to do our best in every single game, that’s our target.

“We’ll go to Wolves to come back to London with the three points.”

The Peterborough victory also saw Vetokele make a long awaited return from injury to cap a fine evening.

Luzon emphasised his satisfaction with the striker’s return and shed more light on the possibility of a new arrival this week, with James Henry still firmly on Charlton’s wanted list and Jermaine Pennant also another possibility.

“The return is great for Igor because he went a long time without playing football.

“He put hard work in off the pitch and he deserved to feature this evening.

“I think we’ll sign one more player, we’re looking at an attacking midfielder.”
