Martin Allen refused to blame fatigue for Barnet’s 2-0 defeat at home to Wycombe Wanderers and says he won't panic whilst the Bees are still creating chances.

Tuesday night’s 2-1 win over Millwall in extra time of the League Cup came at the cost of an additional 30 minutes - unwelcome in a squad of just 19 players.

But the Bees head coach did not feel those extra minutes affected his side adversely even though opponents Wycombe had played half-an-hour less against Fulham in the same competition.

Asked if extra time had left his players tired for today’s visit from the Blues, Allen replied: “I am not going to say yes but it is always a maybe.

“We put a top performance in on Tuesday night and it has been an emotional week.

“This was our first Football League game at this ground, we returned to the Football League last Saturday we went to Leyton Orient in front of 5,000 people, so it has been a big change for all of us.

“It has been a little bit of a transitional period for all of us. We will get used to it and keep doing what we do.”

A stunning Garry Thompson goal put the Chairboys in front after the break before the veteran forward, 34, dispatched a late penalty to kill off the threat of Barnet in injury time.

But Allen will not panic after two defeats and no goals in the Bees’ first two fixtures back in the Football League.

He said: “If you don’t make chances and openings then you have got big problems as a manager. As a player, if you are not getting any chances it’s a big problem.

“But we are making chances and not taking them at the moment. They key thing is we are making chances and opening teams upm, and if we continue to do that those points will come.”

It has been a tough start for Barnet with games against Orient, a League One side last season, and Wycombe, beaten in the League Two Play-Off Final in May, to kick off the opening week of the season.

But Allen believes his side’s performance against Gareth Ainsworth's Wycombe was a measure of how far they have come in the last year after the two met in the FA Cup first round in November.

He said: “It was a measure of how far we have come in a short space of time. We had chances and their goalkeeper (Matt Ingram) is an outstanding goalkeeper who was brilliant here last year.

“It was a brilliant save (from Michael Gash) and there were chances left, right and centre. They were top of the league for eight or nine months and should have won the Play-Off Final so they are a good measure of what we have got to go up against.

“We are not far behind. The chances will come. The players are a great group and you don’t win the Conference by being a bunch of donuts.”

Allen also confirmed the Bees have rejected a “derisory and derogatory” offer for Andy Yiadom. Click here to read more.
