Leyton Orient head coach Ian Hendon believes this afternoon's 1-0 win at Southend United was the perfect final warm-up test ahead of the new season.

The O's rounded off their pre-season campaign with a victory at the League One newcomers and Hendon was delighted his side were given a tough workout especially during the second half.

Hendon, whose side start the new League Two season at home to Barnet on Saturday, said: "Today to be honest was the perfect game. We played really well first half and I felt we created good chances. We got a goal up and then second half we were up against it which is more like real football.

"Southend came out second half and I'm sure Phil gave them a bit at half time and they came out fighting and put us under a lot of pressure."

Hendon added: "We didn't have much of the ball but to be fair we defended well. The keeper's had to make a couple of saves which is good he got tested. Lloyd [James] cleared one off the line doing his job which is what we wanted him to do so it was a fantastic game for us to finish on today.

"It wasn't a 3-0 coast and a cruise like yesterday [Bishop's Stortford] where it was quite comfortable. It was a proper game and that's what we're going to have week in week out."

The only slight concern was striker Paul McCallum after the goalscorer went off early in the second half with a slight knock.

Hendon said: "Paul McCallum got a bit of a knock today so we'll assess him and hopefully that's not too bad.

"As I say we won't know how he is until we assess him tomorrow but hopefully he will be alright."
