West Ham United are continuing their pursuit of Lille midfielder Idrissa Gueye, though they face competition for his signature.

After managing four goals and two assists in 30 starts last season, 25-year-old Gueye is also a target for Marseille, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Southampton, who view the Senegalese international as an ideal replacement for the outgoing Morgan Schneiderlin.

Monday night saw Marseille make a £7 million move for the defensive midfielder, which prompted fresh bids from Palace, Southampton and West Ham.

However, those offers have since been topped by Aston Villa who last night submitted a £9 million bid, according to the Daily Mail.

For financial reasons, Lille are required to sell the player and reports suggest Villa's offer would be enough to prise him away from the Ligue 1 side.
