Contract talks between Barnet and David Stephens remain ongoing, with Martin Allen non-committal on the prospect of the out-of-contract defender remaining with the Bees.

Stephens, 23, was an almost ever-present last season making 42 league appearances as Allen’s side won the Conference for a record third time.

However, his deal at The Hive is up tomorrow (Tuesday) and news on the former Norwich City and Hibernian defender’s future with the club has been thin on the ground.

Asked today if there was any update on Stephens’ situation, Allen told the Times Series he was not handling negotiations with the hulking number six.

“I think talks are ongoing,” stated Allen. “I have not been dealing with it; the chairman has been dealing with it.”

Asked whether he was optimistic about Stephens remaining with the club for a fourth season, Allen replied: “I do not know. I got back from my holiday late last night and the talks are ongoing as far as I know so we will have to see.”

Standard contracts run until June 30, at which time players are allowed to leave their current club and join another.

However, as Stephens is under the age of 24, Barnet would be entitled to compensation for his services should he agree to join another side, assuming they have offered him a deal on a par with his existing contract.

Stephens joined the Bees from Scottish Premier League side Hibs in August 2012 and was Barnet’s Player of the Year in each of his first two seasons with the club. He has made 139 appearances for the club in all competitions.
