West Ham United have, as expected, completed the signing of Marseille winger Dimitri Payet for an "eight figure fee", believed to be in the region of £10.5 million.

Payet, 28, signs a five-year deal with the option of an additional year held by the Hammers.

His arrival at Upton Park has been anticipated for some time now after an offer was accepted by the French club earlier in the week.

Payet told the club website: “West Ham really showed me that they wanted me to come, both the joint-chairmen and the manager.

"That’s very important for me. I was also keen to sign up to a clear project. West Ham’s is very interesting and matches perfectly with my ambitions.

“Firstly I spoke with the manager, who really wished for me to come here and had been watching me a lot. He made it clear that he wanted me to sign and that too was important in my choice.

“I’m an attacking footballer so for sure I like attacking football and that they’re counting on me to help achieve that gives me a sense of responsibility. The fact that I’m here is also down to that.

“I’m very happy to be here. It’s true that it’s taken a little while but that’s normal, negotiations are like that. But now that it’s done, I’m very happy."

Born in the Reunion Islands, Payet began his professional career with Nantes in 2005 before joining St Etienne two years later for a fee of €4 million.

A €9 million switch to Lille followed in 2011 and after two years with Les Dogues, he was on the move again, this time joining Marseille in an €11 million deal.

Payet netted15 times in two seasons at the Stade Velodrome and made 72 league outings for L'OM, helping Marcelo Bielsa's men to a fourth-place finish in the French top flight.

In 332 club appearances, Payet has netted 60 times. He has also won 15 full French caps and scored his first goal for Les Bleus in the 4-3 defeat by Belgium earlier this month.

Payet made his international bow against Romania in 2010 having previously represented France at youth level.
