Surbiton Ladies captain Sarah Haycroft has warned rivals her side are already planning to win a third successive league championship crown next season.

Goals from departing New Zealand international Julia King and Abi Robinson secured a 2-1 Women’s Hockey League championship final win over Canterbury at Lee Valley on Sunday to repeat last season’s title triumph.

Head coach and Sugden Road director of hockey Brett Garrard’s team are unbeaten in domestic competition this season and can complete a second successive double triumph when they face Clifton in the Women’s Cup final on Saturday.

Surbiton finished fifth in the EuroHockey Club Champions Cup in the Netherlands over Easter to scupper hopes of a unique trophy treble in 2015.

But England international Haycroft hinted that could be on the cards next term.

“Sunday was all about the culmination of a whole season undefeated,” she said after lifting the trophy at Queen Elizabeth Park.

“We’ll enjoy the celebration now and plan for next year – hopefully to do the treble.”

Surbiton needed penalty shuttles – with King netting the decisive score – to edge past Reading in Saturday’s semi-final after the scores had finished level at 2-2.

The same player gave her side the lead from a penalty corner 24 hours later, but Surbiton were pegged back before Robinson struck a 48th minute winner.

King, an influential figure at Sugden Road this season, was named player of the match in her last appearance for the club.

“Julia is so composed and her technical ability is fantastic,” said Haycroft paying tribute to the 22-year-old Black Sticks star who has now won domestic titles in the northern and southern hemispheres.

“We’ve got plenty of players like her in the team, our strength-in-depth is good and has helped us to come away as champions.

“Canterbury came out hard, they fought us right until the end, and we had to dig deep.

“We were so keen to get the win for the second year in a row, and that’s what carried us through.”
