Carshalton Athletic boss Rob Scantlebury praised both his own medical team and that of Faversham Town after Robins midfielder Jerome Walker suffered a broken leg on Saturday.

The Ryman Division One South game in Kent was abandoned after 33 minutes when Walker was felled by a rash challenge by Matt Bourne – who was sent off for his troubles.

The game was in doubt all morning and a terrible playing surface was deemed passable by the match officials less than 90 minutes before kick-off.

Faversham took the lead in the wet and blustery conditions through Dean Grant after 10 minutes but the afternoon-changing incident came 20 minutes later.

Walker was leading a counter-attack over the halfway line when Town defender Bourne brought him down – leaving the 26-year-old with a clean break of his right shin.

As Walker received attention from Carshalton physio Warren Filmer and his Town counterpart, along with constant support from Robins captain Tony Sinclair, the referee removed the players from the pitch before deciding to abandon the fixture roughly 20 minutes later.

An ambulance arrived 45 minutes after the initial incident and Walker was taken to a hospital in Ashford.

Scantlebury said: “I just want to thank Warren, Tony, the Faversham physio and the lads who went with Jerome to the hospital.

“Everyone connected with the club wishes Jerome a safe and speedy recovery.”
