Six-time Paralympian David Weir can now add a Commonwealth title to his list of accolades after winning gold last night (Thursday) in the T54 1,500m.
The Wallington-born "Weirwolf" clocked three minutes 21.67 seconds in the Hampden Park stadium rain, beating Kurt Fearnley of Australia (3:23.08) and Alex Dupont of Canada (3:23:62).
Weir, 35, said: "It’s a nice feeling to complete the set of medals – it was in the back of my mind after London 2012 to retire but this was why I carried on because I’d not represented England or won a gold here.
"It feels like London – there’s so many English flags, even the Scottish and the Welsh – it’s great."
He added: "I was a bit worried about the weather all week because the manufacturers of my gloves don't make them anymore – I’ve been trying different stuff and it’s not been working in the rain.
"I prayed that I had a bit of grip for the sprint at the end and I did.
"It’s so much more difficult in the rain – I was going wide in certain parts because there were puddles and I wanted to avoid the spray and you want your push rims to stay dry as long as possible."
