Jose Riga hopes to secure Charlton’s Championship status tomorrow night when they play Watford at The Valley.

Victory over the Hornets in SE7 will take the Addicks up to 48 points and guarantee survival.

But defeat or a draw will leave Riga’s side in limbo heading into the final match of the season at Blackpool.

The head coach said: “In this Championship you can never expect a result.

“Each team is able to beat the other team.

“We know what we have to do against Watford. We know that destiny is still in our hands and I hope we will do the job in that game and not wait for the last one.”

Riga added: “We have to do what we have to do and what gives me the confidence is what the players have already done in the past.

“We have beaten big teams away like Leeds and Nottingham Forest and we got a good result against Bournemouth.

“What they showed, even on Saturday, is that we must be more efficient in this kind of situation because we know that everything is important for us.

“But I believe in my team.”

The Addicks were beaten 3-1 by Blackburn on Saturday, with Marvin Sordell missing a first half penalty which could have levelled the scores at 1-1.

Johnnie Jackson usually takes spot-kicks but the head coach said the striker’s hat-trick in the 3-2 Easter Monday win at Sheffield Wednesday led to a change of plan.

Riga explained: “It was defined before the game on what had happened in the past – Jacko took the penalties - but we knew that at this moment Marvin was feeling good.

“It is more about the story of the play on the pitch because from outside, if you don’t say yes, you say no and the player who doesn’t get the penalty is then not in a good mood.

“If we scored then everybody would be happy.

“Marvin wanted to score for the team and it is a lesson that the players have to learn.”

Blackburn eventually ran out comfortable victors and probably should have won by a greater margin, but Riga felt his side started the match well.

He said: “We played a team that hadn’t lost in their last 10 games and have got big results against big teams.

“Maybe they didn’t start the season this way, but they are in a good mood at the moment.

“We knew the difficulty, but the way we played in the game was good.

“When you have their type of strikers you know that at any moment in the game they may be able to make the difference.”

Riga added: “We organised in a way so that they wouldn’t have those sort of opportunities.

“Last week we conceded at the beginning of the game and came back before half-time and were able to win.

“That was the big difference between the games.”
