Sutton United have signed former Brentford and Norwich City utility man Michael Spillane on an 18-month deal.

Boss Paul Doswell also has an eye on a central defender from the Calor League Premier Division as he moves to plug gaps left by injury and suspension.

Doswell decided not to appeal the two-match ban handed out to Charlie Clough after his red card at Farnborough last week, instead moving to bolster squad numbers ahead of the March 31 deadline.

Irish U21 international Spillane has made more than 130 Football League appearances, scoring 13 goals.

The 24-year-old signed from Cambridge United this week.

Doswell said: “We’ve lost Rhys Weston to injury, Charlie Clough will miss two games [Hayes & Yeading and Dorchester], Alex Wynter has gone back to Crystal Palace and Harry Osborn has returned to Charlton, so we needed to reinforce the team.

“Mickey is a great coup for us, he can play in defence or midfield and will the conduit between the two that Rhys used to be.”

In other news, Paul Telfer has been named as the new head coach of Indy Eleven in America, a position he will take up next month.

Jamie Lawrence, the former Bradford City midfielder and Ryman League coach, has been recruited as assistant coach, while Steve McKimm steps up to head coach.

Doswell said: “It is a great opportunity for Paul. Indy Eleven are in the league below the MLS, they have the financial backing and Paul will be great for them.

“Jamie is a great lad and we felt he deserved a chance to coach at a higher level.”

Meanwhile, entry to this weekend’s clash with Basingstoke at the Lane will be free of charge, and thereafter admission prices are being reduced until the end of the season.

It all marks an exciting time for United, who have also revealed plans for the redevelopment of the Lane in time for next season.
