Charlton’s new head coach Jose Riga confirmed last night he hasn’t yet signed a contract with the club and is unsure how long he will stay for.

Riga, who controversially replaced Chris Powell on Tuesday, took charge of his first game on Wednesday evening, a 0-0 draw against Huddersfield at The Valley.

And afterwards the Belgian, who is a close friend of Charlton owner Roland Duchatelet, revealed he was not concerned with contract issues, just the relegation battle ahead and keeping the Addicks in the Championship.

Riga said: “I haven’t yet signed a contract. I am not here for me, I am here for Charlton and I will work hard all the time.

“I like a challenge and here there is a special situation because the man who asked me to come is a man I know very well.”

Riga also revealed he had been working closely with Charlton assistant manager Alex Dyer to prepare the team ahead of the Huddersfield game.

Powell’s number two has had no confirmation yet he will be staying at the club but looks set to stay at least till the end of the season to offer Riga a helping hand with the squad and keep him up to speed with Charlton’s Championship opponents.

Riga said: “I’ve just said yes to a big challenge because I think and I am sure that I can do it. “My interest is the players, the dressing room and the opinion of my staff on how we are going to focus on it.

“The biggest challenge for me is to give back to Charlton for the reception they gave me on my first day – the reception was great.

“I have been a coach for a long time at many different levels and what I’ve found is that I am always looking to know more. That’s my way of doing it.”

Riga also revealed he was pleased with Charlton’s draw with Huddersfield, although he felt the Addicks deserved more.

“I am happy with the way (we performed) but I am not so happy with the result because I think we had the chances to win this game.

“Certainly in the first 25 minutes we had a lot of chances.

“After that it was a bit more difficult but even in the second half we created chances.

News Shopper: Marvin Sordell goes close in the second half

“I think if Marvin Sordell had scored his chance, although you never know, we would have three points. “So I am happy but I could be more happy than this.

“The welcome was great and I think that we only had two days so we did a good job, but it is only the first step of course.”
