Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club's young athletes open meeting, which was staged for the first time more than 30 years ago, will be held for the first time at the club's Wimbledon Park track headquarters next month.

Many Olympic and international athletes have used the Hercules Wimbledon meeting as a stepping stone on their paths to top-flight athletics.

The meeting itself is one of the largest of its kind and last year attracted more than 700 athletes.

Up till now it has been staged at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre but the club committee took the decision to transfer it to Wimbledon Park to increase the focus on its home track.

Teenager Adam Gemeli, who reached the 100m semi-final on his Olympic debut in London in 2012, made a double appearance at the Hercules Wimbledon young athletes meeting in 2011, when he won the U20 100m and 200m in 10.75secs and 22.02secs - both are meeting records.

Past winners also include Olympic sprinter Montell Douglas, who still holds the women's U17 100m and 200m records of 11.9secs and 24.6secs she set in 2002, while another Olympian Emeka Udechuku still holds the men's U17 shot and discus records of 18.03m and 57.18m he set in 1995.

One of the longest standing meeting records was set by Olympic marathon runner Mark Steinle. As a 12-year-old, he set the U13 boys 1,500m record of 4:41.5 in 1987.

This year's Hercules Wimbledon young athletes meeting will be staged on Sunday, April 6, starting at 11am.

Details of the meeting, which is for youngsters aged from 10 to 19 and attracts entries from all over the country, along with an entry form can be found on the Hercules Wimbledon website: herculeswimbledonac.org.uk.

Elsewhere, marathon runner Claire Grima continued her preparations for this year's Virgin Money London event by helping Surrey to the bronze medals in the senior women's race at the UK Inter-Counties cross-country championships at Cofton Park, Birmingham.

She was the sixth scoring member of the team finishing 81st and covering the 8km course in 31:43, less than four minutes behind the winner.

Hercules Wimbledon expect to have two husband and wife teams in the London race - Claire will be joined by her husband David while club chairman Dave Clarke, three times English senior men's cross-country champion, will be running alongside his wife, Francesca.

They continued their preparations for London by racing in the Milton Keynes half-marathon on Sunday.

Dave was the top over-50 finisher in 1.32:53, with Francesca clocking a lifetime best of 1.32:52 finishing fourth in the women's over-40 category and 13th in the women's race.

Hercules Wimbledon top veteran over-45 woman Lisa Thomas continued her impressive run of races when she once again beat her club age group record in the Wimbledon Common parkrun on Saturday.

This weekend, Hercules Wimbledon's Surrey title-winning senior men's team are in action in the outh of England 12-stage road relay championship at Milton Keynes on Sunday.
