Rosslyn Park saw off Tynedale – the form team in National League One – on Saturday to keep their promotion charge very much alive.

But despite sitting second and hot on the heels of league leaders Doncasters Knights, who they face at the end of the month, head coach Alex Codling admits he is already planning for next season’s push.

Rosslyn Park hosted a Tynedale side that had won six of their eight games since the turn of the year to put the threat of relegation firmly behind them.

But Codling’s men did not let their visitors’ confident mood get the better of them as they claimed a 31-11 victory thanks to a penalty try and scores for David Vincent and Charlie Broughton.

The victory keeps Rosslyn Park in the hunt for top spot as they are eight points behind Doncaster with just five games remaining.

But while the prospect of leapfrogging the Knights is there for Rosslyn Park to aim for, Codling insists his attentions are already focussed on doing it all again next year.

“That was a great win, especially because Tynedale have been on a great run recently,” he said.

“It says a huge amount about these Rosslyn Park players that they are disappointed having won 31-11.

“It has been a fantastic season, the whole aim for next season is just to improve once again. There will be a changing of the guard as the team evolves, but we will always try to keep cutting out the errors.

“The defence is the yardstick of a team’s mentality and our quality in that aspect of the game tells you everything you need to know about our team’s mentality.

“We are planning for next season. The environment is everything for me, making sure you have the right people involved."

Looking ahead: Park coach Alex Codling

He added: “We are in a good place but have things we can improve on both on and off the field. I will do everything I can personally to make that happen.

“At the end of the season, we will regroup, have a look at what we have done and start building towards next season. My passion for the game is as strong as it has ever been.”

The fact that Rosslyn park restricted Tynedale to just a sole Benjamin Frankland try in their 25th game of the season was not lost on Codling, who believes his charges deserve plaudits for keeping their level as high as ever.

“We have made massive strides as a group and we are looking forward to these last five games,” Codling added.

“We need to keep improving and eradicate some of the those errors, but you cannot forget that these boys have played 25 games now this season and they have been incredible.

“Twenty-five league games all over the country is a massive demand on our players. But I love working with this team, they are always keen to keep working and improving as we go forward.”
