Duquemin ready to double up
St Mary’s University’s Zane Duquemin has set his sights firmly on qualifying for a major championship double this summer.
The 22-year-old shot putter ended his short indoor season with a seventh-placed 18.14m effort at a very lively, fun-filled ISTAF Indoor meeting last Saturday at O2 World in Berlin.
Home favourite and current world outdoor champion David Storl thrilled the 10,000 spectators with a convincing 21.20m victory throw in Germany.
But despite claiming the national title last month in Sheffield – which incidentally was his only other competition this year – the indoor season was never on Duquemin’s agenda as he is fully preparing for a fruitful outdoor campaign.
And for Duquemin, who has been surprised by his indoor form, that means representing Jersey at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and forcing his way in to the Great Britain senior squad for the European Championships.
“I always train through the indoors, so I never know what I’m going to produce,” he said.
“I wasn’t really expecting to get to the competition in Berlin, so I was really in a heavy training cycle. But I was reasonably pleased with how I threw.”
He added: “I’ve never been to a senior Championships with GB yet.
“I know 20m is the qualifying standard, which I am aiming to get, so I hope that will get me into medal contention at the Commonwealths and if I qualify for the Europeans then we’ll see what happens next.”
