The hard hitting national bangers roll into the capital tonight to compete for the London Open.

As well as the racing for the accolade of being the 2014 champion, the evening will end in time-honoured fashion with a destruction derby.

With an appointment booked at the scrap yard on Monday morning, by the night’s end, every driver will want to see the end of their car, and so some lively action is guaranteed.

This is one of the many specialised events that Spedeworth International promotes at Wimbledon through the season.

In this instance, the cars raced have a maximum engine size of 1,800cc and more than 60 of the country’s top drivers, including the current world champion Lee Hughes, have already confirmed their place on the grid for this meeting.

With several former champions also in the field, Hughes will not have things all his way.

Expect Jason "Boxer Jack" Jackson to put on a show as always - love him or loathe him, he is always top entertainment.

The national bangers are not racing alone on Sunday, as they will be joined by the lightning rods and the under-rated junior bangers.

The Ford Sierra may have all but disappeared from Britain’s roads, but on the ovals they live on in the rear-wheel-drive lightning rods, who have been fantastic at Plough Lane this winter.

Typically they will offer plenty of high speed, side by side non-contact racing, as they compete in the second round of the new year-long series.

Completing the night’s entertainment will be the junior bangers, who are already receiving rave reviews.

Grid numbers are on the rise compared to last year, with an influx of talented drivers from across the south.

The youngsters already have two major performances under their belt in 2014, at the Birmingham Wheels raceway.

The second outing was part of the annual "heartbreaker" meeting, where they stole the show from their more experienced colleagues.

Having only a limited amount of times that they can race on Sunday evenings in the capital, everybody wants to make a name for themselves around the tight bends of Plough Lane.

Keep an eye on the youngsters, as once again they could well steal the lime light from the seasoned drivers.

First race begins at 5.30pm.
