MICHAEL Morrison admits Charlton’s 90th minute defeat at Wigan was tough to take but believes there are still positives for the team going forward.

The Addicks, starting with a number of new faces on the pitch, took a surprise lead in the third minute thanks to a cool finish from Marvin Sordell.

But two goals in the final two minutes from Marc-Antoine Fortune and Jodi Gomez ensured Wigan came from behind to claim victory, leaving Charlton two points from safety.

Morrison said: “We are pretty gutted in the dressing room at the moment.

“There were a few new faces which gave us some fresh impetus and we found ourselves ahead after a few minutes.

“It was a well taken goal from Marvin but then it was backs against the wall stuff after that.

“It is disappointing when we were so close to winning the game to come away with nothing. It is a real stab in the back.”

Chris Powell handed debuts to new signings Reza Ghoochannejhad and Loic Nego alongside Charlton academy graduate Diego Poyet in a new-look line-up after the latest transfer window.

Despite the late blow for the Addicks, Morrison believes the team can learn from the experience.

“We have to take the positives because I thought the new guys that came in and really stuck together,” he said.

“When we got the ball in the right areas, we looked quite problematic.

“I actually think more goals were there for us and if we had been a bit more advanced, we could have caused them more problems at the back.

“We hit the bar as well and it was a great strike at 1-0, but ultimately you have got to take the positives out of it.

“Everybody stuck together and everybody worked hard and we were only two minutes away from three points.”

The Addicks, after a five games away from home, make their return to The Valley next Saturday with Birmingham their opponents.

Chris Powell’s side have only won one in the last 11 Championship fixtures and will need to get back to winning ways very soon if they are to stay in the division.

Morrison said: “It is not ideal to lose a game in that manner but there are still 19 games to go.

“Everyone knows the situation but we will go again and we will be better next week because the lads will have been together for longer and we can see what happens.

“There is no need for anyone to panic but the quicker you can get the points on the board the better.”
