Sports relief funds 'mini Olympics'
A group of girls from a Watford theatre group were awarded more than £2,000 from Sports Relief to hold a mini-olympic sports day.
The four children, who attend Mensah Theatre Arts, applied for the funds after one of them was diagnosed with epilepsy and found herself excluded from some of the mainstream sports activities at school.
They decided to organise a free event where physically handicapped and able-bodied children will be able to take part in fun activities together.
Rhoda Mensah, 27, who runs the theatre group explained that the event is for children, run by children and should be a fun day, which is free for all children to attend.
Samantha Wilson, 11 and her eight-year-old sister, Paige, Amy Hardstaff, 13 and Ayi Okyonghae, 17, have spoken with Saracens Girls Squad, who are looking to recruit for an Under 15's squad at the event.
They are also hoping to involve Watford Football Club, Watford Harriers and local companies to sponsor the event and donate raffle prizes.
The money raised will go towards the theatre school and to provide free classes for a limited period for children under six with disabilities, within a mainstream class.
The sports day will be held on Sunday, July 20 with a venue to be confirmed.
For more information, email the group at: sport_it@yahoo.co.uk or call Rhoda on 07525172914.
