Twice Olympic champion a draw at 2012 roadshow
 |
| The opening of the Edmonton Leisure Centre saw performances from both adults and children |
DOUBLE Olympic champion Daley Thompson visited Enfield last week to take part in a roadshow to promote the 2012 Games.
Thompson, who claimed gold in the decathlon at the 1980 and 1984 Games, attended the roadshow in a bid to get Londoners involved in the 2012 Olympics.
The roadshow, which is touring every borough in the capital, took place on the same day as the official opening of the Edmonton Leisure Centre.
Organiser Rebecca Barrett said of the event: "It was a great opportunity to get children involved with sporting activities, and for adults to get involved too, making them aware of the business and development opportunities available to them from the 2012 Games.
"The 2012 Olympics are so close. We have to launch our own initiatives and culture projects."
The show provided important information about job creation, opportunities for learning new skills and the wider benefits of culture, sport, business and regeneration.
Under the slogan Going for Gold', local schools including Kingsmead and Lea Valley were invited down for the day to participate in sports arranged by the roadshow team in the hope of getting young people in particular more involved in the build-up to the 2012 Games.
Mrs Barrett added: "We want kids to be more energised about sport, to get more involved."
Cllr Paul McCannah, cabinet member for leisure, culture and the Olympics, said of the eight-month-old leisure centre: "It is a centre for developing sports and fitness, teaching swimming, encouraging social activities and providing a lot of fun for people of all ages and abilities."
The leisure centre has already been approved as a pre-2012 Games training camp.
