Thousands of bees had to be removed from a lamp-post they had decided to live in.

A member of Greenwich Council’s street lighting service was approached by concerned parents about the bees which were in Avery Hill Road, Eltham.

Chris Morris, who works for the councils planning department and used to be a professional beekeeper, removed the bees in the late afternoon, when they were less active.

When he investigated the lamp-post, he found around 20,000 honey bees, which had built four or five combs inside. They were transferred to a hive and then taken out to Kent.

They will be kept away from other bees until it is confirmed they are free of disease. Eventually they will be able to join other hives.
