London Fire Brigade (LFB) have released hilarious cricket-based advice to stop BBQ disasters spoiling The Ashes season.

Featuring a stream of cricketing puns the brigade tweeted cricket fans in a bid to help catch their attention before a run of BBQs take place during tournament.

Advice includes:

  • Eyes off (English cricketer) Alistair Cook and concentrate on actually cooking instead.
  • Only BBQ on a flat surface - unlike the Cardiff wicket.
  • Keep the short legs (kids) away from the barbie.

Fire officials have also released an extensive online guide to BBQing safely.

And in the wake of four grass fires in just three days across the News Shopper patch the fire brigade have published a guide on how to avoid outdoor blazes.

An LFB spokesman said: "The most common causes of grass fires are discarded cigarettes, which if thrown from a car window can ignite dry grass verges.

"Another common way that these fires start is from glass bottles which can concentrate the suns rays onto dry grass and shrubbery."

Advice on how to avoid starting grass fires includes:

  • Never leave camp fires or barbeques unattended and extinguish them properly after you have finished using them. 
  • Clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire. 
  • Dispose of smoking materials such as cigarettes safely. 
  • Explain to children the dangers of playing with and lighting fires.
