HARINGEY: Three strikes and you're out, say council

'You can run, but you can't hide' is the message from Haringey Council going out to motorists who refuse to pay their parking fines.

Drivers dodging three or more outstanding Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) will have their cars towed away on the spot if caught by council traffic wardens.

Wardens will now have access to a hand-held database containing the registration numbers of parking offenders into which they can enter a driver's details.

The machine will flag up if that driver has outstanding parking fines.

And the top 30 vehicles that have run up the most fines will be placed onto the national police computer.

Councillor Brian Haley said: "It's certainly not acceptable simply to ignore parking fines, and I would warn other persistent evaders that we will find their vehicles and that we will have no hesitation in removing them."

He also added that anyone who feels they have been unfairly ticketed can appeal.

Martin Brophy, chairman of Muswell Hill Against Controlled Parking Zones (CPZ) said: "No one would argue that genuine offenders must repay their fines.

"But we have seen increasing evidence of people being issued parking tickets unfairly, or given duplicates from both the wardens and the cameras, while the council hopes that they won't be bothered to go through the appeals process."

Eight cars have already been towed this month and will be taken to court to settle their debts.

The crackdown follows the introduction of the Traffic Management Act 2004 on 31 March this year which encourages local authorities to take firmer action against persistent evaders.
