ENFIELD: Irate protestor chains herself up over parking fine

Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi chained to the gate of the vehicle pound

An irate protester chained herself to the railings of an Edmonton vehicle pound after she was handed a £250 bill for a parking offence.

Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi was dumbfounded when officials gave her the bill but, instead of stumping up the cash, she decided to chain herself to the pound's railings.

Ms Wimborne-Idrissi was on a shopping trip when she parked her navy blue Renault Tango in what she thought was a parking bay in Chingford Mount Road, in the neighbouring borough of Waltham Forest, at 12.30pm on Tuesday.

On her return she was shocked to discover her car had been loaded on to a tow truck.

She tried remonstrating with the officials but they handed her a £50 fine and a £70 clamping fee and then sped off before she could pay up.

She then phoned a parking hotline numerous times to pay her fine, but claimed the number didn't work, something Waltham Forest Council denies.

advertisementThe enraged Year 2 primary teacher at Roger Ascham School, Walthamstow, stormed off to the vehicle pound to complain.

When she was presented with a £250 bill she chained herself to the railings.

Ms Wimbourne-Idrissi, of Sky Peals Road, Woodford Green, said: "I am furious. I realise I parked on a yellow line but I wasn't blocking the road and I was quite prepared to pay the £120 ticket.

"The council seems to apply the parking laws with impunity."

A Waltham Forest Council spokesman said the council did not comment on individual cases but said all residents had the right to peacefully protest.

He added: "Our operatives are not authorised to take payment on the street."
