Traffic calming measures in Waltham Abbey have been causing a problem of their own, after they were installed without illuminated signs.
The two islands were put in Upshire Road a month ago to slow traffic but, rather than reduce the problem of speeding cars, they are now causing vehicles to crash because drivers cannot see them.
Victoria Crouch, who lives near the islands, said: "The islands have just heightened the problems on our road. It's a joke. Someone needs to listen before it's too late and a more serious accident happens."
Mrs Crouch and her mother, June Evans, contacted the council about the problem but were told it was the contractors responsibility to maintain the islands and ensure they were safe.
She said: "I was told it was a mistake and no one had ordered the illuminated signs when the islands were put up. But still nothing has been done about it and there have been seven more crashes since I called them. I'm worried that someone is going to get seriously hurt before long."
The road, on which is Upshire Primary School, has a 30mph speed limit. Local residents appealed for something to be done over concerns that a child could be hit by a speeding car.

The traffic calming measures were installed in the hope of reducing this problem, but because they are not lit, drivers are unable to see the islands when it gets dark.
An Essex County Council spokesman said measures had been taken to ensure that drivers were made aware of the new road layout.
He said: "The new traffic calming measures are currently marked at each end by temporary signage, which is checked daily.
"Permanent signage is due to be installed within the next two weeks. This is a street-lit road, so the new measures should be clearly visible to drivers."
