Disorder fears over train strike threat

Railway operator South West Trains has warned passengers that many of its services will be hit if a planned four-day strike by train drivers goes ahead next week.

Strike action by South West Trains (SWT) drivers has been confirmed for four days at the end of March and start of April.

The announcement followed an earlier stand-off between the rail operator and the Aslef union. Train drivers affiliated to Aslef have rejected a 4.5% pay offer.

The four-day stoppage could hit the hundreds of thousands of passengers who use the services across the south and into London's Waterloo station.

Stewart Palmer, SWT managing director, warned that many stations would have no South West Trains service and passengers may have to make other travel arrangements.

"We regret the significant disruption this will cause to our passengers and we reassure them that we will do everything we can to avoid this strike taking place," he said.

"However if they do go ahead we will pull out all the stops to run as many trains and buses as we can.

"We are very disappointed that ASLEF has taken this decision as we believe that this is a very good offer in the current economic climate."
