A LEAP of 135 places up the league tables makes Lewisham the most improved transport authority in England.

According to figures released by the Audit Commission, the Government inspectors' annual assessment of local councils shows the borough make the jump to joint fifth place.

Lewisham received top marks for reducing the number of road accidents, improving road conditions and improving disabled access at pedestrian crossings.

Councillor Gavin Moore, deputy mayor of Lewisham, said he was pleased with the results: "I am delighted the Audit Commission's assessment shows how significantly the Borough's transport services have improved.

"It is further evidence our transport strategy for the borough is making real progress."
