It’s Tuesday evening, the weekend is days away yet, and after a long hard day at work you’re now facing an arduous commute home.

Standing on the platform waiting for the Tube that will be the first of several legs on your journey, you brace yourself for the prospect of being crammed on to a hot carriage where you’ll be packed in shoulder to shoulder with other passengers.

They mostly have the same objective as you – to get home with minimum stress. But with bad smells, coughing and sniffing, loud music blaring from headphones, bags and elbows constantly prodding you, it’s like these people are deliberately trying to annoy you.

The question is, what can make it better?

This is what Londoners were asked by Thames Clippers which commissioned a survey to uncover the capital’s commuting gripes.

These are the top five things Londoners do to make their commute bearable:

  1. Block it all out – listen to music/podcast, read a book or watch TV
  2. Think happier thoughts – holidays, plans for the weekend etc.
  3. Do all I can to get a seat
  4. Imagine you’re somewhere else
  5. Sleep
