A female cyclist has died after being hit by a tipper truck during this morning’s rush hour in the City of London.

The crash happened just before 9am at Bank junction close to the Underground station.

The 26-year-old woman was treated at the scene but was pronounced dead a short time later.

The woman is tragically the eighth cyclist to die on the capital's roads so far this year.

he area around the scene in Threadneedle Street was closed to traffic but has now reopened.

The truck driver stopped at the scene and City of London Police are investigating.

The latest fatality follows an incident in the early hours of Sunday when a 50-year-old cyclist died in a crash with a car in Harrow.

Before that there were six other cyclist deaths in London - all involving lorries.

One of the two most recent incidents was in Camberwell on May 29 when physiotherapist Esther Hartsilver died.

On April 9, Moira Gemmill, 55, a leading figure in the arts and design world, was killed in a collision with a tipper truck close to Lambeth Bridge in Westminster.
