Trains came to a standstill in the Bromley area yesterday evening after a girl trespassed on the tracks.

The incident happened at around 6pm at St Mary Cray station.

The girl, 15, wandered on to the tracks and walked in the direction of Bickley, eventually climbing a railway gantry.

The electric current running along the railway line was switched off while police and Southeastern staff resolved the situation.

Delays of over an hour were caused to all trains running through the Bromley area.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: "We were called to the rail line between St Mary Cray and Bickley stations just after 6pm on Tuesday after a report of a trespasser on the tracks.

"Officers from BTP and the Metropolitan Police attended and trains were stopped while they conducted a search of the line, assisted by a helicopter from the National Police Air Service.

"Shortly before 6.30pm, a teenage girl was located on a railway gantry above the line.

"Having spoken to officers, she voluntarily came down from the gantry at 6.40pm and was escorted from the line.

"The girl was taken to hospital for a mental health assessment.

"The line was handed back to Network Rail at 6.56pm."
