A 13-YEAR-OLD Lithuanian boy is fighting for his life after being beaten up in a fight between schoolchildren in east London yesterday.

The boy suffered serious head injuries and is in a critical condition after the fight at Prince's Terrace, Newham, at about 3.20pm.

He suffered reported heart failure and was rushed to an east London hospital, before being transferred to a central London hospital.

Five boys have been arrested and are being held at east London police stations.

DCI Jason Gwilliam said: "This was a violent attack on a young boy who is currently fighting for his life in hospital.

"Officers are carrying out a forensic examination of the scene and we are working closely with schools in the immediate area to assist with enquires."

The fight between two groups of youths happened close to the West Ham football stadium, where the Hammers hosted Liverpool last night, but a police spokesman said the attack was not football related.

Police believe the victim was with about six to 10 friends, while the other group was larger.

The fight followed a "minor incident" between the groups earlier in the week, believed to be an "exchange of words".

A number of items were removed from the scene and were being forensically examined.

Mr Gwilliam urged anybody who has any information to call the incident room on 020 8345 3865 or, to remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
