MORE than 88,000 London speeders have escaped fines.
A faulty computer allowed drivers who broke the 20mph speed limit on Tower Bridge to escape being fined, The Times reported.
Between April 2004 and April 2005, the speed limit was broken once every five minutes.
But only 1440 motorists were fined because the computer system had not been upgraded to issue fixed penalty notices for the bridge.
The unique combined weight and speed enforcement system used on the 112-year-old bridge was the first of its kind in Britain.
The speed system constantly monitors cars as they pass over the bridge, calculating the time taken to travel from point A to point B and giving an average speed.
Number plates of cars speeding are then checked against records and penalty charge notices issued.
The City of London Police are responsible for the management of the system.
