London's iconic Routemaster buses will operate on normal services for the last time today.

Transport for London has phased out the red double-decker buses, with their characteristic shape and rear entry-exit platform, over the past few years.

Transport officials say they are impossible for disabled people, or mothers with prams, to use, and are costly to operate as they requite a conductor to check passengers' tickets.

Routemasters will be still be seen on London's streets, operating on two heritage' routes in the centre of the capital, outside of peak hours.

Brian Cooke, chairman of the London TravelWatch watchdog, said he would reluctantly welcome the complete withdrawal of the famous buses.

"Routemasters have served the capital well for nearly half a century, but their retirement from London's streets is now right."

Newer designs with greater accessibility, faster boarding and greater comfort were necessary, he said.
