INDIAN chiefs from the US visited Gravesend to discover where settlers came from nearly 400 years ago.

Explorers left north Kent in 1607 and sailed to Virginia, where they settled and founded Jamestown.

While on their visit Chief Stephen Adkins of the Chickahominy tribe and Chief Kenneth Adams of the Upper Mattaponi made plans to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the settlement in 2007.

The two tribes helped the original settlers to survive their first few winters by trading food and other items with them.

Gravesend and Virginia have many links including Pocahontas, who was born in Virginia and is buried in St George's Church, Church Street, Gravesend.

They also visited the House of Lords.
