THE story behind the rise of local footballer David Beckham came to life during a musical performance by students at Sir George Monoux College.

The young people from the Chingford Road college in Walthamstow took to the stage to perform Beckham the Musical and wowed audiences with their talent.

Beforehand, performing arts teacher Sandra Dryer and two students Sarah Merrifield and Danai Nwergo, were interviewed by BBC Radio London about the musical.

Sarah and Danai sang an acoustic ballad of Beckham's move from Manchester United to Real Madrid live to the radio audience during the interview Beckham the Musical is about David Beckham's time at school, his football career, his personal life and how he achieved success.

The script, for which the youngsters gathered information from press releases, magazines and the internet, was written by Ms Dryer.

She also directed the performance while two other performing arts teachers, Louisa Kennedy and Leanne Tiller, arranged the music and choreographed the show.

The musical was performed at Wadham Lodge in Kitchener Road, Walthamstow, last week and deemed a great success by everyone who saw it.
