Police are using the softly-softly approach towards elusive suspects who fail to turn up for court and bail appearances.

Until February 28, Wandsworth police will be writing to around 150 of those with outstanding warrants, inviting them to surrender by appointment.

Inspector John Hayward said: "Those who have received the letters have the advantage of avoiding being detained overnight or even for a weekend. We won't have to use force to enter their property, and we may not have to search their property, and the court will be told of their co-operation."

He added: "Those who don't comply will be targeted. There is no hiding from the police. They will come, sooner or later. You will be caught, and most probably at a time when it's most inconvenient."
