PLANS are in the pipeline to build a mosque for Belmarsh prisoners.

Muslim inmates have objected to praying in the prison's multi-denominational chapel where they sometimes need to cover Christian crosses.

However, suggestions the 150ft by 150ft mosque, complete with dome and minaret, would cost £1.6m are premature, according to prison officials.

A spokesman for the Western Way prison, in Thamesmead, says plans are at a very early stage and there are no detailed drawings or costing estimates.

He said: "We are looking at building the mosque as part of a continued effort to improve facilities at Belmarsh.

"There is a sizeable number of Muslim prisoners and we need a substantial building to ensure their needs are met.

"If it costs £1.6m, then so be it."

There are around 150 Muslim inmates, including hook-handed cleric Abu Hamza, 47, who is charged with offences which include inciting racial hatred.

The mosque will most likely be a block building without a dome or minaret. It will serve a number of purposes including Muslim prayers.

A spokesman for the Prison Service said: "The Prison Service is committed to treating all prisoners with humanity and decency and this includes facilitating the practice of recognised religions."

If the plans are given the go-ahead by prison officials, they will be submitted to Greenwich Council for approval.

A spokesman for the Muslim Council of Britain said: "As many of the prisoners are held without trial, their religious needs, at least, should be respected ."
