Murder investigation undermined by CCTV failure

IN an astonishing admission today One, the rail operators of Wood Street station where a man was fatally stabbed in the early hours of Monday morning, confessed that CCTV cameras at the station near Walthamstow were not operational.

In lieu of CCTV pictures from the station, police have been reduced to scouring the footage from cameras on nearby shops. Yet 40 hours after the attack there has been no description released of any suspect and the identity of the victim is still unknown.

Described as white, in his mid-50s and approximately 5'10", the victim was wearing a dark grey suit and white shirt. Police believe he may have given his name as John' to ambulance crews.

A post mortem today determined that the victim had died of blood loss following a stab wound to the stomach.

Police have not confirmed that the victim was inside the station when he was attacked.

In a statement the rail operators One said they were starting an internal investigation and would be reviewing all their procedures for the maintenance of CCTV systems at their stations.

Wood Street station was still closed earlier today.

Police continue to appeal for witnesses to phone 0208 345 1585, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
