Football star George Best admitted a charge of drink-driving when he appeared in a south London court today.

The 57-year-old former Ireland international was arrested in Merton just after midnight on Friday morning on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Best appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates Court this morning and pleaded guilty to a drink-driving charge.

He was fined £1500, ordered to pay costs of £55, and banned from driving for 20 months.

Best, who also played for Manchester United, had a liver transplant in 2002.

His wife, Alex Best, is currently away in Australia taking part in ITV's "I'm a Celebrity - Get Me Out Of Here!".
