Man-made 'electric storm' for South Bank

A light and sound display powered by a 43m wind turbine is to create a storm on London’s South Bank tonight.

The Shell 'Electric Storm' will create a new show every night between the trees lining the 500m from near the London Eye to the IBM building.

The weather will cause the colour, music and light of the man-made storm to change.

Patricia Hewitt, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, will turn on London’s new winter attraction tonight.

The world-first is free for all passers-by and runs until mid-February.

The Department of Trade and Industry is the sponsor of Shell Electric Storm.

Ms Hewitt said: "Climate change and its effects have become real to us all.

"I hope Shell Electric Storm will capture the imagination of Londoners and visitors to the capital while helping to build awareness of renewable energy sources in an exciting way."

Chairman of Shell UK Clive Mather said: "Shell Electric Storm will demonstrate the power that comes from just one wind turbine."
