An exhibition featuring hundreds of props from the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy has already broken box office records at the Science Museum – before it opens.

Organisers say the exhibition, which opens tomorrow, has already sold more advance tickets than any other exhibition at the Science Museum.

Hundreds of journalists and photographers were expected at the media opening of the LOTR exhibition at the Science Museum in Kensington today.

Opening hours for the exhibition have already been extended and advanced booking is the only way to guarantee entry.

The exhibition features hundreds of props, including models, armour, weapons, and costumes, from the movie, along with displays highlighting the sophisticated technology used to being the LOTR trilogy to the movie screen.

The first two instalments of the trilogy, which will be followed by the final part later this year, are already among the most popular movies of all time.

Exhibition organisers have taken the unusual step of banning cameras and mobile phones, to ward off any attempts to copy the film-making technology which is on show.

Amongst the items on display are weapons used by Arwen, Gandalf, Frodo and Aragorn in the movies, outfits worn by Arwen, Galadriel, and Gandalf, and the prosthetics used to transform actors who played Hobbit roles.

"This excellent exhibition lifts the lid on the secrets behind this amazing film trilogy, providing a unique behind-the-scenes look at the science and technology that has created such stunning results," said Jon Tucker of the Science Museum.
