A former headteacher who stole $500,000 from her school to bankroll her "Imelda Marcos" lifestyle has been jailed for five years.

Colleen McCabe was sentenced today at Southwark Crown Court, after earlier being convicted of 11 counts of theft from St John Rigby College in July.

The former nun had been due for sentencing in August, but missed her appearance, and was later taken to hospital.

She told her lawyers she had missed the court appearance because she had slept-in.

McCabe was convicted of theft after an audit revealed she had stolen £500,000 from St John Rigby College, a state-funded Roman Catholic school in south-east London.

While she spent the money, the school struggled for funds and could not afford to fully stock its library.

The court was told she spent thousands of pounds on shoes alone, in a spending display that "would have made Imelda Marcos proud".
