A man is in a critical condition with serious head injures after an attack near Farringdon tube station, early this morning.

Police believe the man, aged in his 30’s, was attacked by three men, possibly armed with an iron bar.

The Farringdon underground station was closed until lunchtime today while police completed a search of the area.

London Underground said in a statement this afternoon passengers could still expect delays on the circle and metropolitan tube services.

Thameslink trains were not stopping at the station this morning.

The London Ambulance Service was called at 12.20am. The man was found opposite the Tube station, at the junction of Crowcross and Turnmills streets.

Police believe passengers who caught the last tube home may have seen the attack or have other information to help the investigation.

The man underwent surgery at a London hospital this morning. His wife is at his bedside.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said police believe one or more of the man’s three attackers were armed with a heavy blunt instrument, possibly an iron bar. After the assault they were seen heading towards Turnmills Street.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said police were keeping an open mind regarding the motive.

Anyone with information should call the Control Room at Islington on 020 7704 1212.
