Watchdog to investigate Chelsea shoot-out

Britain's police watchdog is to look into the killing of a suspected gunman following a five-hour stand-off with armed police in the wealthy Chelsea area of London last night.

Police laid siege to a house in Markham Square for five hours after reports of a man firing shots in the house there shortly before 5pm.

Police returned fire, and at about 9.45pm four explosions, thought to be stun grenades, were heard.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said that the police exchanged gunfire several times with the man.

Firearms officers eventually entered a house and found the man. He was taken outside and given first aid, but was later pronounced dead at the scene.

It has not been confirmed whether the man was shot dead by officers.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission confirmed it would be investigating the fatal shooting.

A spokesman for the IPCC said: "The IPCC will independently investigate the fatal shooting of a man in the Kings Road area of Chelsea.
