The centre dedicated to murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence is to receive funding for security.

Lewisham Council agreed at a Mayor and Cabinet meeting last night to award a one-off grant of up to £15,000 to the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust.

The Stephen Lawrence Centre for young people interested in architecture, based in Brookmill Road, Deptford, was vandalised on February 14 just one week after opening.

Eight windows at the £10m centre, featuring a facade by award-winning artist Chris Ofili, were smashed in the attack.

The money is to be used to pay for a security consultant who will advise the centre on the improvements it can make.

Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock said the council was proud to have such an iconic building in the borough.

Two 17-year-old boys, a 19-year-old man and another man, aged 20, are bailed to return pending further investigation of the vandalism.
