Billionaire Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone is selling off 50 of the rarest cars in the world from his private collection today.

An auction in Battersea Park will include his Mercedes Roadster valued at £3.25 million and a £5,000 Ford Anglia that cost £660 in 1964.

The sale, being handled by American firm RM Auctions, is expected to make at least £15million for the 76-year-old billionaire.

"Nothing could jumpstart collectors' enthusiasm for this inaugural sale more than the announcement of the Bernie Ecclestone Collection," said RM owner Rob Myers.

"Our London 2007 sale will surely attract international acclaim and garner the attention of the entire classic car world," he added.

The cars have been collected by Mr Ecclestone since he started selling motorcycles and second-hand cars from a small business in Kent in the 50s.

Terry Lovell, author of Bernie's Game, a bestselling biography of Mr Ecclestone, said: "His decision to sell much of his beloved collection is curious. With an estimated fortune of £3 billion, he hardly needs the extra millions.

"He is 77 and perhaps he believes it's time to tidy up some of his private assets."
